Getting Settled in Fernandina Beach
We’re getting settled in Fernandina Beach FL for the winter. We decided to splurge and to get ourselves a mooring for the month and we’re glad we did.
Getting a mooring allows for the pump-out boat to visit you, so grumpy they’re no longer doing boats at anchor, the ability to have mail sent, and the use of the bathrooms and showers.
Shortly after arriving we made our way to the close grocery store, which is now an ALDI.. Nope, closed for construction. Not an issue, we rode to the other grocery store in town.. Nope, closed for construction.
After a quick ride around town to see what was available grocery wise we found a tiny bit at the small Walmart in town, a tiny bit at the Dollar General, and a tiny (expensive) bit at the local health food store.
But just before we started ordering from Walmart Delivery we remembered a third grocery store on the island. A six and a half mile bike ride later we’ve got a full fridge and freezer and are once again overflowing with food.
The big reason we chose this particular harbor for the winter is that it’s a convenient spot for Ryan to use as his “Medical Home Port” not to be confused with his other home ports. This is a place where he can get a primary care physician and dentists and unfortunately he’s also going to need a neurologist.
So he’s been to the primary care, everything looks good, and next week he’ll be visiting the neurologist to establish care there. The big reason is that while he has’t had a seizure since he started taking his medication faithfully, he’s going to need a whole lot of documentation related to ongoing care and a stable condition if he wants to get his captains license.
So we’re going to hang here for a bit.
And the extra exercise has been helping me as well. My blood sugar has been more in line, my weight is once again trending down, and the spill over effects have me doing the day job even better. Although that might be the good quality cafe in town.
I’ll share more about Fernanadina Beach soon. For now though I’m going to enjoy slowing down for a couple of months since all of the boys’ winter projects are basically done.
